This is somewhat distressing. Johnny Depp was named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive, and he's going to be starring as a character based on Hunter S. Thompson in the upcoming movie The Rum Diary.

These are all good things. Hunter S. Thompson was someone whose life could spawn several movies. Johnny Depp could play Tinkerbell and be convincing. And the Sexiest Man Alive thing? I'm not going to argue with that.

I'm just (*whispering*) not crazy about the Hunter S. Thompson look with the giant Ray Bans. I think they were a part of the de-prettying that Depp had to undergo to look more like Thompson.

This is not to say there's anything at all wrong with the Ray Ban 3138 Shooter. It's just that you need a certain look for the Shooters to work well on you. In particular, you should be large and have a large face. Otherwise, you'll probably look bug-eyed. You can choose them with a bridge size of 58 mm or 62 mm so you can size it to your face to some extent.

If it's the "cigarette holder" circle you're after, then yep, you gotta go with the Shooters. If it's the aviator shape that attracts you, there are numerous styles that are made in many different sizes so you can get the great aviator look without them overpowering your facial features. I can understand why they went with this particular model in the movie. It's not just because that's what Hunter S. Thompson wore, it's appropriate because he was such a larger than life person, and the film character should be that way also.

I'd be willing to bet that Shooters make a bit of a comeback with the release of the movie, that's pinpointed for the exact release time of "2010" so far. If you're a trend setting type, you could get a pair now, and then when they show up in the movie you'll be seen as a style prophet. That would be cool.

But if you want to be eternally stylish and you're not larger-than-life, then you really cannot go wrong with the Aviators. They come in every frame and lens color you can think of, and in sizes flattering to any size face. And they'll look just as great in 2015 as they will in 2010 and blend in effortlessly with your own look.

Black Eyed Pea Fergie has a definite style that is her own. It's partly classic, with a certain amount of experimentation and a healthy dose of confidence. The 34-year-old Fergie and fellow Pea Taboo recently hit the Jump Footwear Launch at Juliet in New York City rocking an 80s look with a bright blue jacket paired with black and white and completed with a pair of very of-the-moment black wedge heel shoes.

If the stuff going on in her personal life was getting to her, she certainly didn't let on. According to Taboo as quoted in Us Weekly, "Everything's good. We're a family and we're not going to allow any nonsense to bring us down."

The photo to the left is a great example of looking hot without looking like everyone else. The black shorts are a great touch, and they're dressed up with a belt so that the outfit can go pretty much anywhere (in California anyway) and look exactly right.

Taylor Swift won an armload of CMA trophies the other night: Female Vocalist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Video of the Year, and Album of the Year. The electrons are still flowing hot and heavy on Country Music forums over what it all means. Is she this generation's Garth Brooks, about to bring young women and their disposable income in to save country music from the decline of the record industry? Or is she this generation's Garth Brooks, killing "real" country once and for all?

Or maybe she's just a very talented, lovely young woman who has brought some much-needed interest to the world of country music.

Whatever the verdict musically, I think it is safe to say that Taylor is a beautiful girl who appears to be developing a great style: classy, but still young and fun.

The Prada sunglasses she wore arriving at the CMAs last week are a fine example of the style. Miuccia Prada, head of the Italian fashion label, is an artist from a family of artists whose medium is things to wear. Ms. Prada could not be more the opposite from Donatella Versace, another head of an Italian label. Prada is classic and minimal, while Versace is in-your-face glam. Both have their place. Both work on the right kind of person. Swift appears to be growing up to be more a Prada kind of woman than a Versace kind of woman, who would be someone more like Madonna.

Who knows what Ms. Swift's future will bring? I hope that her choices in style indicate that she'll make good choices in life, since she's obviously going to be much in the public eye.
